  • 7g sachet dried yeast

  • 60g butter, softened










  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips










  • 2 tbsp bicarbonate of soda

  • Place milk and sugar in a large bowl. Sprinkle over yeast. Stand for 10 minutes or until mixture is frothy. Stir in salt, flour and half the butter to make a sticky dough.

    3 easy ways to soften butter for baking.







  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and elastic. Knead in chocolate chips. Place dough in a large greased bowl. Cover. Stand in a warm place for 1 1/2 hours or until dough has doubled in size.





  • Meanwhile, grease 2 large baking trays. Preheat oven to 230C/210C fan-forced.





  • Divide dough into 6 even portions. Roll 1 portion into a 70cm-long log (see notes). Twist to create a pretzel shape. Place on prepared trays. Repeat with remaining dough portions.





  • Place 1 1/2 cups warm water in a shallow dish. Add bicarbonate of soda. Stir until dissolved. One at a time, carefully dip each pretzel in the bicarbonate of soda mixture, allowing excess to drain off. Return to prepared trays. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden and cooked through.





  • Meanwhile, melt remaining butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Brush pretzels with butter. Transfer to a wire rack. Stand for 10 minutes to cool slightly. Serve.
